Scheduled for a complete renovation in late 2023, Pleasant Variety and the adjacent liquor store are being transformed into residences. Meetinghouse worked closely with the client to ensure the character and unique features of the building would be enhanced - not lost - during the design process.

Previously, the ground floor at 42-44 Pleasant Street housed the Pleasant Street Package Store and Pleasant Variety, businesses that had been in the owner’s family since the 1930’s.  In 2012, the package store changed hands and ultimately closed at the end of 2021.  Two upstairs apartments at 44 Pleasant (currently occupied) were originally built for the family.  An additional storeroom occupies the 2nd floor of 42 Pleasant.

Planned changes include the creation of 4 additional residential units, all large, one-bedroom apartments.  As Meetinghouse addresses the existing conditions and proposed use, we are also working to re-establish the façade of the building within the streetscape.  Traditional New England colors, mullioned windows and decorative trim are efforts to retain the classic character of Pleasant Street.

This property is adjacent to the Pleasant Street Mill District and is one of many properties in this region working towards providing housing in growth areas.

Year of project: 2023 (expected)
